Every year brings hundreds of “best businesses to start this year” lists. Most repeat the same ideas, and almost none of them show a single number. This article takes a different route: we looked at Azerbaijan’s official statistics — the State Statistics Committee, the Central Bank, the World Bank — and picked the sectors where demand is growing in the numbers.
The most promising areas to start in 2026: e-commerce, online education, AI-powered services, video content production and digital marketing services (the digital track), plus food service, courier delivery, logistics, renovation and interiors, home services, car service, hybrid and EV service, guesthouses, beauty and accounting for small businesses. They share one thing: customers are already searching for them online.
An important note: no list guarantees success. Success depends less on the sector and more on how you build the business. This list answers the question “where is the demand?” — the rest is execution.
What to know when choosing a business in 2026
First, the big picture. According to the World Bank’s autumn 2025 forecast, Azerbaijan’s economy will grow by about 1.8% in 2026. That is not fast growth. In a period like this there is no “everything sells” effect: people spend more carefully, compare options and read reviews.
At the same time, the place where customers make decisions has changed:
- 9.27 million people use the internet — 89% of the population (DataReportal, end of 2025).
- There are 7.61 million social media user identities in the country — equal to 73.1% of the population (October 2025).
- According to the Central Bank, the number of e-commerce transactions rose 43.4% to 1.5 billion in 2025, and their value rose 29.8% to AZN 86.4 billion. The figure covers all card payments made online, not only online shopping, but the direction is clear: money is moving online.
The conclusion is simple: in a period of weak economic growth, the winner is the business that appears at the moment the customer is searching. That is why every sector below also has a “digital side” section.
15 businesses in one table
| # | Business | Why now | Start-up cost | Main customer channel |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| 2 | Online courses and tutoring | 89% internet use | Low | Website, Instagram, YouTube |
| 3 | AI-powered services | 88% of companies use AI | Low | LinkedIn, Google, referrals |
| 4 | Video content and UGC production | 7.61M social media identities | Low | Instagram, TikTok, portfolio site |

| 14 | Beauty and personal care | Steady, repeat demand | Medium | Instagram, Google Maps |
| 15 | Accounting for small businesses | Bureaucracy — owners’ No. 1 problem | Low | Google, website, LinkedIn |
“Start-up cost” is a rough comparison: low — mostly your time and a laptop; medium — equipment or rent; high — vehicles, construction or a large lease.
5 businesses on the digital track
1. Online store (website + social media)
Why now: according to the Central Bank, the value of e-commerce payments grew 29.8% in 2025. People are used to paying online by card. Selling through “DM us” on Instagram still works, but a store with no prices and orders that take days to confirm sends buyers to competitors.
How to start: pick a narrow category (only orthopaedic shoes for children, only house plants). If you want to start without stock, read about the dropshipping model.
Digital side: a website with prices, delivery terms and online payment; Meta ads to create demand and Google Shopping to catch buyers who are already searching.
2. Online courses and tutoring
Why now: 89% of the population is online, so you can sell lessons to the whole country, not just your city. Foreign languages, exam preparation, programming, accounting and design are always in demand.
How to start: begin with live online group lessons, then turn the most requested topic into a recorded course. Free, useful content (short videos, guides) builds trust.
Digital side: a page with the course programme, the teacher’s profile and a sign-up form; short lesson videos on Instagram and TikTok, boosted with ads.
3. AI-powered services
Why now: according to McKinsey’s 2025 survey, 88% of companies use AI in at least one business function, but only 7% have scaled it across the organisation. Companies want AI but struggle to implement it — that gap is a business.
Examples: customer-support chatbots for companies, document and report automation, translation and content production, AI assistants for sales teams.
Digital side: a website with case studies that show concrete results, expert content on LinkedIn, Google and LinkedIn ads for B2B.
4. Video content and UGC production
Why now: there are 7.61 million social media identities in the country, and ad platforms increasingly favour video. Most small businesses have nobody to shoot and edit video. Phone-shot videos of real people talking about a product (UGC) are especially in demand.
How to start: pick a niche (restaurants, cosmetics, real estate), make 5–10 sample videos and show them as a portfolio.
Digital side: a portfolio website and active Instagram/TikTok accounts — here you are the shop window.
5. Digital marketing services for small businesses
Why now: each of the other 14 businesses on this list has to find customers online, but most owners cannot set up ad accounts, analytics or SEO themselves. Social media management, ad management and website development are among the most requested services.
How to start: specialise in one sector (only clinics or only restaurants) and measure results: number of leads, cost per lead. Clients trust a marketer who talks in numbers.
Digital side: a website with case studies, visibility in Google Search (SEO), activity on LinkedIn.
10 businesses in services and trade
6. Café, home kitchen and catering
Why now: according to the State Statistics Committee, food service turnover reached AZN 2.488 billion in January–November 2025, up 12.8% in real terms. It is one of the fastest-growing parts of the consumer market.
How to start: start small instead of with a big restaurant: a delivery-only kitchen, office lunches, event catering, homemade desserts. Rent and staff costs stay low.
Digital side: a complete Google Maps profile with reviews, a website with the menu and prices, food videos on Instagram. Someone searching for “lunch near me” must find you on the map.
7. Courier and last-mile delivery
Why now: as online sales grow, every order has to reach a door. Most small online stores cannot keep their own courier and look for a reliable, on-time partner.
How to start: begin with one district or one niche (for example, same-day delivery for Instagram stores), then expand.
Digital side: a website with a price calculator and order form, Meta and Google ads aimed at online stores.
8. Logistics and freight forwarding
Why now: according to Prime Minister Ali Asadov, transit cargo on the Middle Corridor grew by about 11% in 2025. Baku port forecast 37% growth in container throughput for 2025. More cargo means more demand for forwarding, customs clearance, warehousing and trucking.
How to start: this sector needs more capital and experience. For a small player, the most realistic entry points are customs brokerage, consolidation of small shipments or local haulage.
Digital side: a multilingual website (az/en/ru), Google Search ads for foreign clients, LinkedIn.
9. Renovation, interior design and furniture
Why now: according to the State Statistics Committee, 1.83 million square metres of housing were completed in the first half of 2025 — about 2.6 times more than a year earlier. That is 12,955 new flats and houses. Every new home means renovation, a kitchen, furniture and lighting.
How to start: instead of a full renovation company, specialise: kitchen furniture, bathroom renovation, turnkey design projects.
Digital side: a portfolio website with before-and-after photos, Google ads on searches like “custom kitchen furniture”, project videos on Instagram.
10. Home services: cleaning, handyman, air-conditioner service
Why now: the same housing figures apply here: new homes need cleaning, plumbers, electricians, air-conditioner installation and service. These services repeat — a happy customer calls again.
How to start: you can begin with little equipment. What matters most is arriving on time and stating the price upfront.
Digital side: in this sector customers almost always search on Google: “air conditioner repair”, “home cleaning”. A Google Maps profile, a website with services and prices, and search ads are the main channel.
11. Car service and detailing
Why now: according to the State Statistics Committee, 113,840 passenger cars were imported in 2025. At the end of 2024, 1.83 million motor vehicles were registered in the country. Every car means oil changes, diagnostics, bodywork, washing and polishing.
How to start: a narrow service is easier than a general garage: detailing and ceramic coating, tyre service, diagnostics for specific brands.
Digital side: a Google Maps profile with reviews, a website with online booking, videos of your work on Instagram.
12. Hybrid and electric vehicle service
Why now: according to the State Statistics Committee, there were 5,941 electric cars in the country at the start of 2025 — almost twice as many as a year earlier. According to the State Customs Committee, plug-in hybrid imports rose 6.4 times to 31,873 in the first nine months of 2025. Few mechanics can service these cars yet.
How to start: battery diagnostics, hybrid system service, home charger installation. Training and certification are an advantage here.
Digital side: these customers often research their problem on Google or ChatGPT. A website that explains each service, SEO and search ads are the main channel.
13. Guesthouse and regional tourism
Why now: according to the State Statistics Committee, 2.57 million foreign visitors came to Azerbaijan in 2025. To be honest, that is 2.1% fewer than in 2024. But the market is shifting — arrivals from China and Central Asia are growing, and regional and rural travel is becoming more popular.
How to start: instead of another hotel in Baku, offer a different experience in the regions: a guesthouse in Gabala, Shaki, Guba or Lankaran, local food, horse riding, mountain tours.
Digital side: a website in English and Russian, a direct booking form (no Booking commission), Google Maps and Google Search ads.
14. Beauty and personal care
Why now: there is no separate official growth statistic for this sector, but its strength lies elsewhere: demand repeats. Hair, nails, cosmetology, massage — clients come back every 2–6 weeks. A client won once stays for years.
How to start: start with one specialty instead of a big salon (only cosmetology or only a men’s barber) and build a name on quality.
Digital side: photos and videos of your work on Instagram, online booking, reviews on Google Maps. Local Meta ads bring in clients from nearby.
15. Accounting and paperwork for small businesses
Why now: in a 2025 survey of 203 entrepreneurs commissioned by KOBİA (the SME Development Agency), owners named bureaucracy and paperwork as their main concern. In the first half of 2026 alone, SME Houses provided more than 312,000 services to entrepreneurs. Owners want to run their business, not file tax returns.
How to start: if you have accounting experience, start by serving 5–10 small companies on a monthly subscription.
Digital side: a website that explains your service packages, Google ads on “accounting services” searches, useful articles for owners (SEO).
How to choose the right business for you
Skills
Can you do this work yourself, or will you have to hand everything to staff?
Capital
Do you have enough money to get through the first 6 months with no income?
Demand
Do people search for this service on Google and Instagram? Do competitors advertise?
Difference
How will you stand out: price, speed, quality, a narrow specialty?
The third question is the one most often skipped. The simplest test: type your service into Google and look — are competitors running ads, how many businesses are on Maps, what do reviews say? If competitors advertise, there is money in the sector.
The digital minimum for every new business
Whatever sector you choose, you need these four things from day one:
- Google Business Profile — it is free. People find you on Maps and see your address, opening hours and reviews.
- A website — your Instagram page belongs to the platform, not to you. A website shows up in Google Search, is the right landing page for ads and lets you measure leads. We explain whether you need one and where to start on the website development page.
- Advertising — nobody knows a new business. Google Ads finds people who are searching for you, while Instagram and Facebook ads find people who are not searching yet but might be interested. There are new channels too: ChatGPT ads appear when customers ask ChatGPT a question.
- Measurement — if you do not know which ad brings leads, you are spending blind. GA4 and ad pixels should be set up from day one.
A good business idea does not bring customers. Being in front of customers at the moment they search for you does.
Government support: the “Startup” certificate
If you are starting an innovative project, look at the “Startup” certificate issued by the SME Development Agency (KOBİA). It is given to micro and small businesses and allows a 3-year exemption from tax on profit or income earned from innovative activity. Terms can change, so check smb.gov.az or call the 131 hotline before applying.
Which business will be most profitable in 2026?
There is no universal answer. According to official statistics, the fastest-growing demand is in food service (+12.8% in 2025), e-commerce, services linked to housing construction (renovation, furniture) and car services. Profit depends less on the sector and more on cost control and the ability to find customers.
Which business can I start with little money?
Services need the least capital: online courses, video content production, AI and digital marketing services, accounting, home services. Your main investment there is your skills and time.
What do I need to start an online business?
A product or service to sell, a website that clearly shows prices and terms, online payment, a delivery solution and advertising to bring customers. If you want to start without stock, look at the dropshipping model.
Does a new business need a website, or is Instagram enough?
Instagram is good for awareness, but it does not appear in Google Search, and your account depends on the platform’s rules. A website brings in customers who search on Google, serves as a landing page for ads and lets you measure which channel drives sales. The best results come when both work together.
How much should a new business spend on advertising?
There is no fixed number — it depends on the sector, the competition and the city. Start with a small test budget on one channel, measure your cost per lead, then add budget to the channel that works.
Is there government support for starting a business?
Yes. KOBİA’s “Startup” certificate gives innovative projects a 3-year tax benefit, and SME Houses offer registration and advisory services. Check smb.gov.az for current programmes.
How can I test whether a business will work before investing?
With a small test. Before a big investment, check demand with a few weeks of advertising: how many people are interested, how many ask for a price, how many buy. That is far more accurate than “I think people will buy it”.
Conclusion
Economically, 2026 is a quiet year, but that does not make it a bad year for business. Demand has not disappeared, it has moved: people look for food, a handyman, a course or a renovation team on their phone first. In all 15 sectors on this list, the winner will be the one who shows up first in that search.
